Google's Completed March 2022 Product Reviews Update

Google has completed the rollout of the third edition of the product reviews update, which was published nearly three weeks ago.

Google has announced that the March 2022 product reviews upgrade has now been completed. This update has officially finished rolling out over 19 days, beginning on March 23, 2022.

The declaration. “The Google product review update has been completely rolled out.” Thank you very much!” Alan Kent of Google posted on Twitter.
Product reviews will be updated in March 2022. As a reminder, the March 2022 product reviews update began to be rolled out on March 23, 2022, at about 12:00 PM ET. This update took 19 days to become available after it was announced. So this update began on March 23, 2022, and ended on April 11, 2022.

Impact on SEO Community

The March 2022 product reviews update appeared to start slowly, with some volatility appearing as early as March 23rd. But the majority of the volatility appeared on March 31st. I was able to summarise the community’s reaction in a single blog post on the Search Engine Roundtable. Some of the early comments, ranking charts, and social shares from some SEOs are included. In short, if your site was affected by this upgrade, you undoubtedly felt it very strongly. Although it was not as ubiquitous as the December update in terms of community talk.

What to do if it Impacts You?

If you are negatively impacted by this product reviews update, Google has provided recommendations on what to consider. That advice may be found in our original story, which can be found here.

Furthermore, Google published two new recommended practices in conjunction with this change. The first of which states that you should include more multimedia in your product reviews. The second of which states that you should include links to several sellers rather than just one. Google published the following two items:

  • To support your expertise and strengthen the credibility of your review, include proof such as photos, audio, or other connections from your own experience with the product.
  • Include links to numerous sellers so that the reader can buy from the merchant of their choosing.
Google Updated the Following Criteria That Matters
  • Include useful in-depth information, such as the pros or cons of a given item, specifications on how a product functions, or how the product varies from earlier editions.
  • Come from people who have used the products and demonstrate what the thing looks like or how it is used.
  • Include information that is not provided by the maker, such as photos, audio, or links to other content that details the reviewer’s experience.
  • Discuss comparative products or explain what sets one product apart from its competitors.
Google Introduced Three Additional Pieces of Advice
  • Are revisions to product reviews important to ranking lists and comparison reviews? Yes. Product review updates apply to all types of review content. The best practices that we’ve shared are also applicable. However, because ranked lists are shorter in length, you may wish to display expertise and reaffirm authenticity more briefly. Citing relevant results and presenting real photographs from tests you conducted with the product can be effective approaches to accomplish this.
  • Are there any suggestions for reviews that recommend the “best” products? If you recommend a product as the greatest overall or the best for a specific purpose, be sure to explain why you think that product is the best. What sets this product apart from others on the market? Why is the product particularly well-suited to its intended use? Include first-hand evidence to back up your claims.
  • Should I continue to write reviews for individual products if I write a review that covers numerous products? Writing a high-quality ranked list of related products in conjunction with in-depth single-product reviews for each recommended product might be useful. If you create both, make sure the ranking list contains enough relevant content to stand alone.

Why & Importance of this Update?

The Google product reviews update wants to promote review content that goes above and beyond much of what you read on the web. Google has stated that it will prioritize these kinds of product reviews in its search results rankings.

Google does not penalize low-quality product evaluations with “thin material that just summarises a handful of products.” However, if you provide such content and find that your rankings have been lowered as a result of other content being promoted above yours, it will feel like a penalty. According to Google, this is not a penalty for your material; rather, Google is rewarding sites with more insightful review content with rankings higher than yours.

Technically, this change should affect only product review content and not other forms of content.
